The Department of Military Veterans embarks on the verification of military veterans

05 March 2013

The Department of Military Veterans (DMV) is embarking on the verification process of military veterans who were excluded from the integration process during the formation of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in 1994.

The verification process, which is being conducted at the Braam Park Building in Braamfontein (Johannesburg) as from tomorrow 6th March 2013, focuses primarily on the former Non-Statutory Forces (NSF) members comprising of members of the Azanian National Liberation Army Military Veterans Association, (AZANLAMVA), Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) as well as the Azanian People’s Liberation Army Military Veterans Association, (APLAMVA).

“This verification exercise constitutes an important part of the core mandate of the DMV, to amongst others have an accurate database with the necessary integrity and reliability such that no military veteran is left out and there is no room for fraud and corruption when we begin to roll out the social and economic benefits to military veterans and their dependants in this coming financial year.

Accordingly we will be working with a sense of urgency to ensure the finalisation of the verification process and the consolidation of the entire database on military veterans.” said the Director-General of the DMV, Mr Tsepe Motumi. The DMV has established a verification panel of five members from the former NSF to execute this verification task.

The panel is composed five members and is chaired by the Major General (retired) EM Mashoala.

The various Military Veterans Associations have submitted the lists to the DMV of their respective members to be interviewed and verified:

AZANLAMVA: 679
APLAMVA: 233
MKMVA: (Still to forward the names to the DMV)

“Most of the MKMVA and APLAMVA members are in the database as they were part of the integration process into the SANDF in 1994, thus more attention during this verification process will be given to AZANLA as they were never integrated into the SANDF and their members would therefore not be found in the system.”

Thus far the DMV has a database of about 56 000 and is also in the process of cleaning up that data working in concert with the Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).
