Exile Repatriation Project

The repatriation and homecoming of the remains of our struggle stalwarts

  • In September 2024, government launched the Exile Repatriation Project to facilitate and focus on our ongoing repatriation of the remains of struggle stalwarts.
  • This project highlights ongoing efforts to exhume and repatriate the remains of 35 struggle stalwarts who died in Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • Among the human remains that will be brought back to South Africa are those of liberation stalwarts Advocate Duma Nokwe, Florence Mposhosho and Basil February.
  • Through this project, government is honouring requests for repatriation of the mortal remains of our liberation fighters brought by families, civilians and military veterans.
  • The repatriation of human remains is undertaken on a country-to-country approach and involves exhumation and repatriation, handover, reception and home coming ceremonies.

Pension Benefit roll out

We are here to inform the community of military veterans that as of freedom day this year (27 April 2023), the military veterans can now start the application processes for the pension payout.Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla addressing the media on the department's readiness to roll out the pension benefit.
