Call for nominations for membership of the Advisory Council on Military Veterans
The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, the Hon Matsie Angeline Motshekga hereby invites nominations by stakeholders, interest groups and associations of suitably qualified individuals to be appointed as members of the Advisory Council for Military Veterans. The Advisory Council on Military Veterans is established in terms of Section 9 of the Military Veterans Act 18 of 2011 to attend to the interests of military veterans.
Powers and Functions of the Military Veterans Advisory Council:
The functions of the Advisory Council as provided for in the Military Veterans Act are as follows:
- Advise the Minister on any matter relating to the policy applicable to military veterans;
- Advise the Minister on any matter pertaining to the improvement of socio-economic conditions of military veterans,
- Make recommendations to the Minister or the Director-General on any matters relating to the empowerment of military veterans in line with the Act.
- Make recommendations to the Minister or the Director-General on any matters relating to the honouring and memorialising and the heritage of military veterans in line with the Act and National best practices.
- Report to the Minister on its activities (which must also be tabled in parliament).
Composition of the Advisory Council.
- The Advisory Council shall be composed of a maximum of 15 members appointed by the Minister.
- At least 50 per cent of the members the Advisory Counsil must be Military Veterans .
- The members of the Advisory Counsil must have the relevant knowledge, experience or expertise that would enable the Advisory Counsil to perform its functions effectively and efficiently.
- The members must be appointed by the Minister through formal nomination process.
Requirements:
The persons who seek to serve on the Advisory Council must have relevant knowledge, experience or expertise in the following or related areas:
- Military Veterans affairs, Defence and security,
- Broader socio-economic field including discipline such as health, social services and development, education, law, politics and economics.
- Financial Management,
- Broader empowerment and business field.
- Understanding of policy, e.g. public, social, developmental and economic.
Term of office of the Advisory Council:
- The term of office of for members of the Advisory Council is for a period not exceeding five years. A member is eligible for re-appointment for at the end of his/her term of office, but may not serve for more than two terms.
Remuneration of the Advisory Council:
The members of the Advisory Council on Military Veterans who are not in the full-time employment of the State, will be remunerated in accordance with the National Treasury Guidelines on the Remuneration Levels: Service Benefit Packages For Functionaries of Certain Statutory and Other Institutions, Category C – Sub-category C1. The remuneration details will form part of the appointment contract.
Nomination Procedure:
- Nomination must be in writing and submitted to the Director-General before or by the 24 May 2026.
- Every nomination must contain:
- Full written personal and career particulars of every nominee;
- Full reasons and motivation for the nomination; and
- The written and signed acceptance of the nomination by every nominee.
