Former Chief of the South African Navy, retired Vice-Admiral Mosiwa Samuel Hlongwane, has been appointed Acting Director General of the Department of Military Veterans (DMV). The appointment of Vice Admiral Hlongwane follows the precautionary suspension of Ms Irene Mpolweni who joined the department as Director General in June 2021.
Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Mr Thabang Makwetla, introduced Vice Admiral Hlongwane yesterday to staff during the department’s two-day strategic planning session which started on Thursday and ended on Friday the 5th of May 2023.
With over 37 years of military service, and having been at the helm of the South African Navy for eight years, the Ministry is confident that Vice Admiral Hlongwane possesses the necessary experience and expertise to turn around the performance of the department.
Hlongwane joined Umkhonto We Sizwe in 1982 and underwent military training in Angola and the former USSR. He attended the Naval Course at the Caspian Naval Red Banner College in Azerbaijan. In 1994, he attended the Bridging and orientation courses at the South African Naval College and Maritime Warfare School. He served as Director: Naval Policy & Doctrine from 1 April 2008. He was appointed Deputy Chief of the Navy in 2011.
Vice Admiral Hlongwane is expected to hit the ground running. He joins the department at a crucial time when the DMV is working around the clock to roll out pensions and other benefits that are due to deserving military veterans nationwide.
