Department pays homage to Lt-Gen. L. Moloi

The memorial service for the late Lt-General (retired) Lehlohonolo Moloi, Former Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) commander and Military Veteran, is taking place today (the 31st December) at the City of Tshwane Central Hall at 12h00 noon. The funeral is on Friday, 03rd January 2014 at Walter Sisulu Hall, Randburg. It will then proceed to the Westpark Cemetry,Heroes Acre.

Lt-General Moloi was a Military Veteran and served in the structures of the Department of Military Veterans, notably the Medals' Committee, whose mandate was dedicated to the honoring and memorialising the heritage of Military Veterans. He was part of the team which ensured the honoring of the first generation of Umkhonto we Sizwe commanders, culminating in the three medal parades the Department of Military Veterans hosted during 2012 and amongst whose recipients were former Presidents Mandela, Mbeki, the current President Jacob Zuma,Rivonia Trialists and members of the Luthuli Detachment, to which he belonged.

He worked in uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) operations department, responsible for the deployment and infiltration of members into the country. He returned to Lesotho, where he lived in exile, and worked there with assassinated SA Communist party general secretary Chris Hani, until he was transferred to Lusaka in the early 1980s.

On his return to South Africa, he played a major role in the negotiations to ensure uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) members were integrated into the then newly-formed SANDF, which he joined as a senior officer.

“Up to the time of his untimely passing, he still remained active in the structures and activities of Military Veterans. He remained a keen golf player up to the last. The Department of Military Veterans passes its condolences to the entire family, the Military Veteran’s community and South Africa at large” said the Director General, Mr Tsepe Motumi.

Lt-General (retired) Lehlohonolo Moloi will be given a full military funeral in Gauteng province, on the 3rd of January 2014.
