The Department of Military Veterans (DMV), together with the Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture cordially invites members of the media and the public to the 38th Commemoration of the Battle of Lurhwayizo.
The event, which seeks to honour and memorialise the heroic shoot-out which lasted over 36 hours between Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) combatant Mbulelo “Khaya Kasibe” “Ntsizwa” Ngono, and a combined Transkei Defence Force, Transkei Police, South African Police and the use of state helicopters.
Fellow MK comrades, Mazizi Maqekeza and Dumisani Mafu created a diversion that allowed for the eventual escape of Mbulelo Ngono from Lurwhayizo to Nqakayi 29km away. Mbulelo Ngono and Mazizi Maqhekeza were among the many MK activists that fled across the South African border to join the ANC in the armed struggle against the apartheid state.
We invite members of the media to attend and cover this significant event, and look forward to your presence. To confirm your attendance, kindly RSVP to media@dmv.gov.za.
