The Department of Military Veterans will visit provinces to address issues of education support for military veterans and their dependents. The first province to be visited by the Department is KZN, at the Durban Works Regiment, Smit street at 08:00am and PMB Ngoba Makhosi Natal Carbineers on the 01 December 2021, at 08:30 am.
As part of its mandate the DMV has been providing education support to Military Veterans’ and their dependents since 2013/14. In the previous academic years the DMV has faced challenges with school fees not paid on time and invoices accruing to following financial years. There has been challenges with the administration of this benefit due to a number of reasons namely; schools noncompliance due to tax related matters, limited communications to Military Veterans and dependents on applications outcomes, changes in the policy wherein Military Veterans have been requested to produce proof of relations to their dependents in a form of unabridged birth certificate and other forms.
Other challenges faced by the Department with regards to the payments of school fees to dependents of military veterans are, the public tertiary education support. It has also been impacted by administration problems of one of the Department’s implementing agents (NSFAS). A major factor has been limited presence of DMV offices in provinces, which makes it difficult for most military veterans to enquire and update their information on the database.
The Department is obliged to meet the commitment to provide education support to approved Military Veterans and dependents until they complete their studies, provided they meet their contractual obligations as per bursary agreement. The Department will also visit the Free State and the Northern Cape between the 2 – 6 December 2021.
