Written by Morena Motaung

Morena Motaung was born in 1976 in the East Rand township pf Katlehong. He became politically involved as a ten-year old during the student protest in 1985-1986. He was a founding member of the Katlehong Youth League (KAYL).

He joined the ANC Youth League and was recruited in the MK underground movement 1990 while in high school. In 1990, he became part of a Self Defence Unit (SDU) in katlehong after the late Oliver Tambo had issued a directive for MK soldiers to train SDU's in townships.

In 1994, he joined the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) following the integration of the the statutory and non-statutory forces into a single army that would serve the new democracy.
