Ruth Segomotsi Mompati Foundation and Family of Ruth Segomotsi Mompati together with other esteemed stakeholders have consciously decided to unveil a tombstone for this world icon; the special unveiling is scheduled as follows
Mama Ruth Segomotsi Mompati was born on the 14th September 1925 in Ganyesa village in the District of Vryburg in the North West Province and she passed on in 2015 on the 11th May. She was a true Christian disciple and a qualified teacher. She joined the ANC in 1952, served at various structures of the ANC and the ANC Women’s league and she joined the ANC at the period which the liberation movement was launching its defiance campaign. After the apartheid government retrenched her as a teacher, she was later employed as typists or secretary at the Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo’s Attorneys.
She was part of the ANC leadership that diligently planned the 1955 congress of the people, which adopted the Freedom Charter which became the cornerstone and the framework for the policy posture and the blueprint for the envisaged South Africa. In 1956 Mama Ruth Mompati, Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa and others diligently orchestrated the Women’s march on the 09th August to the then regime of terror in Pretoria, the march was attended by more than 20 000 women from different races and tribes.
This Luthuli detachment worked and led under the stewardship of Comrade Moses Malome Kotane, and she was also critical in the formation of the strategic posture of the ANC’s underground operations, after they have established a strong underground movement she was again deployed by the ANC to join its military wing – Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). And subsequently mandated to join comrade Oliver Tambo and other cadres who were deployed internationally solicit the international support against the apartheid government. She was amongst the first women to join MK and underwent military training in Soviet Union in 1963.
In her execution of the ANC mandate, she visited and addressed at various platforms in countries such as Zambia, Botswana, Tanzania, United Kingdom, Western Europe and many others furthering the aspirations and objectives of the ANC. This giant of the downtrodden and destitute masses of our people, represented in interests of the South African Women and the world at various international platforms. Progressively with her wealth of experience the ANC deployed her into the National Parliament and later as the Mayor of Naledi Local Municipality at Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati.
