The Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Mr Thabang Makwetla to issue medical healthcare cards to Military Veterans in Mpumalanga

The Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Mr Thabang Makwetla, is expected to announce millions of rands allocated for the provision of education to military veterans' and their dependents on the 08th November 2013, where healthcare cards will be issued to 212 military veterans in Mpumalanga.

The distribution of healthcare cards will be done in two stages:

The campaign seeks to distribute 4800 healthcare cards to military veterans across the country from the 15th October to 4th December 2013. 1386 healthcare cards have been distributed in KZN, Limpopo and North West.

The campaign is aimed at ensuring prevention of ill health; early detection; and treatment of illnesses as well as ensuring that healthcare is given to qualifying military veterans’. Those who will be receiving these services should bring along the following documents: an ID, proof of income if employed, (or affidavit if unemployed), and the letter that they have received from the Department of Military Veterans.

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa Nqakula launched the military veterans health and wellness campaign on the 15th of October 2013 in KZN. 2 million rands has been set aside for this campaign. and the theme is “Your health is our concern".

The wellness include free medical check ups as well as counselling to military veterans including amongst others chronic diseases, eye tests which are provided by professional doctors from the Military Veterans Healthcare Practitioners Association.

The Department of Military Veterans embarks on this campaign after observing that most military veterans call for healthcare when they are already too sick and without proper authorisation to access the South African Medical Health Services facilities.
