Women Military Veterans Association of South Africa (WOMVASA)

The Women Military Veterans Association of South Africa ( WOMVASA) was officially launched, at the two day conference of the women military veterans at Mount Grace Gauteng Province. The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa Nqakula, delivered the key note address at the conference wherein she enjoined the 105 women military veterans delegates, to unite, be organized in order to ensure economic empowerment and advance women emancipation.
On her part, the Minister of Small Business Development Ms Lindiwe Zulu, committed  to assist women military veterans’ with business opportunities, as well as facilitate their empowerment in establishing companies and cooperatives, so that they can enter the mainstream of the economy. Meanwhile the Deputy Minister of Energy Ms Thembi Majola, committed to assist women military veterans’ with opportunities in the energy.
The two day conference concluded with the election of the following executive, of the newly established Women Military Veterans Association  of South Africa (WOMVASA:

  1. National Chairperson: Sally Dlamini (MKMVA)
  2. 1st Deputy Chairpersson Kutie Thondlana (APLAMVA)
  3.  2nd Deputy Chairperson Joy Frankenburg (CMVO)
  4. Secretary Thandi Lieta (MKMVA)
  5. Deputy Secretary Mammy Nyathela (AZANLAMVA)
  6. Treasurer - Maggie Thandi Mashoala (MKMVA)

Additional members: Yvonne Modiakgotla, Nombeko Pamela Daniels, Wendy Malunga, Nomvuyo Mafu, Mpho Kgoabane, Tamara Moti, Salome Mawela, Zukizwa Ngxowa, Maria Brand.

The conference further resolved that:

  • “that we shall adopt the Constitution of WOMVASA as agreed upon by the delegates representing formations of the women military veterans;
  • that such engagements with the Ministry we shall secure support for setting up administration and institutional capacity for WOMVASA both in the immediate and long term
  • that the expanded WOMVASA leadership structure to be mandated to continue work on the draft constitution to report back on progress within six months.
  • that we shall ensure there is  alignment of WOMVASA policies with the Constitution of the of the RSA; the MV Act 18 of 2011; other relevant legislation as well as the Constitution of the SANMVA; 
  • that WOMVASA will on behalf of women military veterans engage the Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans, other government departments, state entities and all stakeholders ; to provide socio-economic support to women military veterans;
  • that WOMVASA will develop policies and programmes that advance the rights of women military veterans
  •  that WOMVASA will advocate for the promotion of the realisation of the rights of women military veterans;
  • that WOMVASA will work closely with the DMV to accelerate the delivery of benefits as stipulated in Sec 5 of the MV Act 18 of 2011;
  • that we shall develop a short medium to long term programme of action to ensure the realisation of social and economic rights of women military veterans in society;
  • that we shall we shall support the efforts of  the DMV and other stakeholders to speedily create a credible and reliable database;
  • that we shall develop a communication and marketing programme for WOMVASA;
  • that we shall work closely with other military veterans in the Southern African Region; the continent and the world particularly women military veterans to advance the rights of women military veterans.”
