The department to build 1500 houses for Military Veterans

The Director General of the Department of Military Veterans Mr Tsepe Motumi, said that R78m has been transferred to the Department of Human Settlements for the top up to the construction of about 1500 houses for military veterans’ during the financial year 2015/16.

The Director-General said this when presenting the fourth quarterly report of the addressing the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans in Cape Town today.

"We have now turned the corner as the Department of Military Veterans. The provision of benefits to military veterans will be accelerated in a manner unprecedented during the year 2015/16" the Director General said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Military Veterans has to date, provided education support to almost 4000 military veterans and their dependants with education support.

With regards to healthcare support, no less than 6 795 military veterans’ were assisted by the end of the last quarter on 31st March 2015.

As at 31st March 2015 the Department of Military Veterans spent 91% of its budget which constitutes R462million.

In line with the announcement made by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, in her budget vote speech delivered on 20th May 2015, the Director General Mr Tsepe Motumi, said that a turnaround strategy has been developed and will be rolled out to ensure that the Department works more effectively and efficiently in delivering on its mandate.
