Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans to launch the Education Support Programme

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Mr Thabang Makwetla, is expected to launch the Education Support Programme for 2014 and beyond. 4million has been set aside by the Department of Military Veterans, for the provision of bursary schemes to enable eligible military veterans and their dependents an opportunity to further their studies.

200 bona fide Military Veterans and their dependents received bursaries from the Department of Military Veterans to further their studies from next year. A further 400 is expected to be awarded bursaries in the year 2014.

The Military Veterans Act 18 of 2011, places an obligation for the state to roll out skills acquisition and education support to Military Veterans and their dependents, the department aims to improve their quality of life so they may realise their socio-economic progress.

The Department of Military Veterans seeks to support the government’s vision of a South Africa in which all its people have access to lifelong learning, as well as education and training, which will, in turn, contribute towards improving the quality of life and building a peaceful, prosperous and democratic South Africa.

Military Veterans and their dependents are encouraged to submit their applications for bursaries for the next financial year 2014/2015. The application process is done through submitting their letters of request to the Department of Military Veterans, verification will be done and they will be contacted if their applications are successful.
