Salute to the Military Veterans of the June 16 generation

16 June 2014

The Department of Military Veterans takes this opportunity of the National Commemoration of the 38th Anniversary of the June 16 Uprisings, to salute the Military Veterans of the time.

The Department of Military Veterans congratulates the thousands of Military Veterans who during this period 38 years ago took the bull by its horns. They took brave steps to swell the ranks of the armed wings of the liberation movements such as Umkhonto we Sizwe and the Azanian People’s Liberation Army. Through their daring sacrifices, South Africa not only celebrates 20 years of democracy, but its second phase to deepening and accelerating economic transformation in which scores of these Military Veterans in their diversity, continues to play a critical role.

The Department of Military Veterans commits to ensuring that in their honour, all Military Veterans are provided with access to free healthcare services, education support to them and their dependents, business support, creation of job opportunities, skills development as well as the provision of decent houses amongst others. The DMV remains committed to building a united, dignified and empowered Military Veterans’ community.

We urge the Military Veterans of the June 16 generations and all others, the South African National Military Veterans Association and indeed all Military Veterans organisations to work with us in ensuring the attainment of that vision.
