President Nyerere commemorated

14 October 2018

The Department of Military Veterans joins the progressive people of the world in general, and the African continent in particular in commemorating the death on this day 14 October, of one of the greatest fighters for the liberation of Africa,  the late first President of a free Tanzania, Julius Mwalimu Nyerere.

He became the Prime Minister of Lake Tanganyika from 1961 to 1963 and the the President of Tanzania from 1964 to 1985.

The late President Mwalimu opened the doors of Tanzania and the hearts of all Tanzanians to many military veterans, including the late President Nelson Mandela as early as 1962, for them to execute the armed struggle for liberation.

As the country commemorates the centenary of Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu, it is befitting for the DMV as the custodian of military veterans interests, to take this opportunity to express its gratitue on  behalf of the military veterans to the people of Tanzania.

Military Veterans formations such as  uMkhonto we Sizwe, Azanian People’s Liberation Army as well as the Azanian National Liberation Army enjoyed the hospitality of the Tanzanians in the most difficult years of colonial and apartheid rule.

“The sacrifices that the late President Mwalimu and the people of Tanzania made over decades were not in vain. South Africa, Namibia,Angola, Zimbabwe and Mozambique are all  free now, thanks to your selflessness and commitment to the vision of a free and united Africa.

“The military veterans in general and the DMV in particular remain forever indebted to you and all those countries that gave solidarity and shelter, to the military veterans at the most difficult of times and at times even at the cost of your lives. May the spirit of the late President Mwalimu rest in eternal peace.” Said Acting Director General of the DMV  Lt General ( Rtd) Mgwebi)
