Department Salutes Women Military Veterans on International Women Military Day

08 March 2016

The Department of Military Veterans takes the opportunity, on the celebration of International Women’s Day, to salute and congratulate all women Military Veterans who have contributed in bringing about democracy, non-racialism, non-sexism, a free South Africa and its reconstruction and development over the last 22 years.

International Women’s Day is celebrated across the world under the auspices of the UN, as well as by various continental, regional bodies, government, non-governmental organisations and civil society structures.

As correctly observed by the current serving Secretary General of the UN, Ban ki Moon, when he said: “Countries with more gender equality have better economic growth. Companies with more women leaders perform better. Peace agreements that include women are more durable. Parliaments with more women enact more legislation on key social issues such as health, education, anti-discrimination and child support. The evidence is clear equality for women means progress for all.

In South Africa for the first time, the Minister of Defence & Military Veterans, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, convened the first ever workshop of women military veterans’ wherein the idea of establishing a gender forum for military veterans’ was introduced.

An interim gender forum was established, to coordinate activities of women military veterans’, from statutory and non-statutory and forces. Work is under way to officially launch a Gender Forum to represent women military veterans.
