Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to Address the June 1976 Military Veterans and the Youth of Today Dialogue in Soweto

26 June 2015

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa Nqakula, will be delivering a keynote address at the first ever dialogue between the June 16, 1976 military veterans and the youth of today at the Morris Issacson High School-Soweto from 09:00 to 16:00 on the 29th June 2015. The dialogue aims to exchange experiences with the view to enhancing social cohesion and nation building.

Amongst the participants in this historic dialogue are members of the June 16 uprisings who joined the various military formations to fight for liberation such as uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), The Azanian People Liberation (Apla) and the Azanian National Liberation Army (Azanla). The theme of the dialogue is “Connecting the past and present for a better future – June 16 Military Veterans and the youth speak”.

On June 16, 39 years ago, the youth of South Africa in general and the students in particular made their statement clear for the country and the world to know, that their time had come to take their rightful place in shaping the educational, political, social, economic landscape and destiny of our country into their own hands. From that day onwards, the course of the African continent was to change in an irreversible manner. The dialogue also seeks to build awareness about the history and expertise of military veterans and their possible contribution towards sustainable socio-economic development as well as to enhance the Department of Military Veterans’ brand.

“This is the first ever dialogue of its kind, which seeks to amongst others join the nation in celebrating the youth month as well as encouraging contribution of the June 16, enhancing social cohesion and nation building” said the Director-General, Mr Tsepe Motumi.

Other participants in the dialogue includes SASCO, NYDA, COSAS and SA Youth Council.
