Gauteng Military Veterans to receive 200 flats in Fleurhof

The Department of Military Veterans in partnership with the National, and Provincial Department of Human Settlements as well as the Gauteng Premier’s Office, will be hand over 200 flats to military veterans, at Fleurhof in the west of Johannesburg on 18 December 2018 at 09:00am.

The Ministers of Defence and Military Veterans and Human Settlements, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Ms Nomaindia Mfeketo, the Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Human Settlements MEC Uhuru Moiloa will lead the handover ceremony and hand  the keys to the beneficiaries.

The flats were made possible by the Gauteng’s MEC for Human Settlements, Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Mr Uhuru Moiloa, who committed to deliver over 600 housing units to Military Veterans by the Financial Year end. This housing project comes as a dedication to the centenaries of the First Commander in Chief of military veterans, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, as well as Mama Albertina Sisulu who changed the course of the country’s future for the better through their activism against apartheid.

This is the first bold project of its kind in the country, which is aimed at restoring and honouring the dignity of military veterans, to enhance social cohesion and nation building.

For many years the pace of delivery to Military Veterans has been very slow and had challenges which are now being resolved.

Consultation with key stakeholders such as the National, provincial and local South African National Military Veterans Association (SANMVA) in the province delivered an integrated list of military veterans who were in need of shelter.

There are a number of other developments aimed at delivering more decent houses to military veterans. The area is Lufhereng (Johannesburg), the project is expected to foster delivery of 70 units by the 31st March, the end of the Financial Year 2018/19.

The Department seeks to restore the dignity of Military Veterans through the provision of decent housing and the building of a better life for all.
