10 February 2022

THE ONKGOPOTSE TIRO TESTIMONY LIVES ON

The Azanian National Liberation Army Military Veterans Association (AZANLAMVA)  will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the life of Okgopotse Abraham Tiro, since the speech known as Turfloop Testimony at the Great Hall of the University of Limpopo in 1972. The event will take place at Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane, on the 12th February 2022 from 09:00 under the theme:  “The Tiro Testimony Lives On”

AZANLAMVA will be supported by the Department of Military Veterans, as they commemorate and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the life of Onkgopotse. AZANLAMVA will reflect on the day (1st February), the day of the formation of this fearless military wing, the Azanian National Liberation Army, the military wing of the then exiled Black Consciousness Movement of Azania.

The significance of holding this year’s event in Limpopo, Polokwane in particular, is influenced by Cde Okgopotse Tiro’s contribution to the struggle for liberation and his activism during his days as a student, at the University of the North.

The event will be preceded by a memorial lecture and responses by Tiro’s peers and former colleagues both from Turfloop and exile, in Professor Harry Nengwekhulu and the former Secretary General of the then exile B.C.M(A),Mr Mpotseng Kgokong. Also in attendance will be the former Commander in Chief of AZANLA Forces, and former Minister of Science and Technology, Mr Mosibudi Mangena. The guest speaker of the day is Mr Don Nkadimeng, who is the founder member and Chair of the Black Lawyers Association (BLA) and activist.

The DMV has recently been strengthened by the Presidential Task Team on military veterans, and is working tirelessly to resolve matters that were raised by military veterans in recent past. The Department encourages military veterans to unite, share resources and continue to celebrate the past in order to enrich the future as active citizens of South Africa.
