Official handover of exhumed remains of 14 Poqo prisoners

The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Adv. Michael Masutha, together with the Deputy Minister of Defence & Military Veterans’ Mr Kebby Maphatsoe, will preside over the official handover ceremony of the exhumed human remains of 14 POQO political prisoners. The remains were exhumed in Pretoria on 14 December 2016 and 31 January 2017.

The handover is part of the gallows project which entails the exhumation, handover and reburial of the remains of 83 political prisoners who were hanged at the Kgosi Mampuru gallows and buried in unmarked graves. A total of 130 political prisoners were hanged at the gallows between 1960 and 1990. Of these, the remains of 61 political prisoners have already been exhumed.
