The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans to host a Women Military Veterans' Workshop

05 March 2014

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa Nqakula will host the first ever workshop for South African Women Military Veterans, on Saturday the 08 March 2014.

The main objective of the workshop is to commemorate the 39th anniversary of International Women' Day and to develop a way forward on how the Department can provide dedicated and focused programmes to empower Women Military Veterans.

According to the United Nations, International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

This year’s International Women’s Day not only coincides with South Africa's celebration of 20 years of freedom and democracy, but provides an opportune moment for Women Military Veterans to reflect on their experiences of the past 20 years of democracy. In addition, the day will offer a platform for Women Military Veterans to exchange ideas, and share lessons with their counterparts from other countries. About 250 Women Military Veterans from across the globe will represent various military associations at the workshop.

The Department of Military Veterans, in partnership with the South African National Military Veterans Association (SANMVA), is proud to convene this workshop to honour and salute Women Military Veterans.

The theme of the workshop is “Women Military Veterans-Together Inspiring Change”.
