Education support Q & A

The following questions and answers should offer some insight into details surrounding the education support benefit in the interest of empowering verified Military Veterans (and their beneficiaries) who applied and those who are yet to apply for education support.

In an effort to answer some of the most asked questions regarding the education support initiative, the director responsible for education support answered some of your questions:

When was the closing date for applications?

The closing date for applications was extended to the 6th of February 2015. New applicants were encouraged to apply for education support and successful applicants were informed.

What is the criteria for application and ultimately receiving the bursary or education support from the department?

The main criteria is that if the applicant is a Military Veteran, they must be on the Military Veterans Database of the department. It is your responsibility as a Military Veteran to register your dependants on the database.

Thereafter, the following criteria applies:

  1. Military veteran or a legal or factual dependant of a military veteran.
  2. Enrolled with a public/government school or tertiary institution.
  3. Ready to participate in the DMV’s education support initiatives.
How will I be informed if my application has been successful?

A letter will be sent to you and for basic education, there is a form that needs to be filled in by the school for banking details and the invoice.

If it is tertiary education we send the institutions our list via NFSAS a lit of beneficiaries and they assist them at those institutions to register and everything else.

How much money is allocated per student?

Answer: At the moment, the amount per student is the school fees for each year through to matric. And R68,000 for higher education applicants.

For special education needs (for children with special needs), there is no limit for the year.

What does the bursary money cover?

The R68,000 covers everything including education, accomodation (residence), transport and so on. As long as all the expenses do not exceed R68,000 per year. If you live far from the institution, can apply for transportation allowance, but still have to remain within the R68,000 threshhold.

What else is important to note about the bursary?

You can only be assisted once (with one degree) at tertiary level.

At basic education level, you are asissted from any grade all the way through to matric.

The only criteria is that you have to pass every year. If you fail, then yiou are given only one more chance. If you fail again, your bursary will be terminated and given to the next deserving person.
